Is your content worth it?

Updated: Dec 18, 2019

With the constant barrage of content swirling around in all directions, readers make quick decisions on how they will spend their time. Will they answer the alluring chime on their phone? Will they open the sure-to-be informative e-newsletter of an organization they follow? Will they click on the coupon promising huge savings from a favorite retailer?

If your content is the lucky winner of a reader’s split-second choice on where to direct their attention and their brain capacity, make it worth their time. Here are three ways to thank your reader for choosing wisely:

1. Acknowledge their feelings. A reader will stick with you if you tap into certain emotions. Research shows that viral content evokes laughter, surprise, understanding or compassion.

2. Give them a nugget they can use. Is there an interesting factoid that illuminates an issue? Can you recommend a new app they should explore? Can you share a travel or household hack? Everyone loves to save time and money. My current favorite: Use binder clips to fix broken keyboard feet. It works, and because you probably have one in your desk already, it’s also free!

3. Motivate them to move. More than a call-to-action asking a reader to buy, call or share, inspire the reader to care about what you just told them. By being industrious with that binder clip, you avoided spending $20 on new keyboard feet from the manufacturer. Keep finding smart solutions, and you’ll save yourself hundreds of dollars over time.

Whether you’re creating a social media post to capture consumers or engaging your workforce with a new strategy or policy, make sure your content is worth their time.
